Lantern’s landmark light installation unveiled to mark Ramadan in London

Lantern’s installation, entitled ‘Sundial’, draws inspiration from the daily rhythm of Ramadan, marked by the breaking of fast at sunset and the pre-dawn meal of Suhoor.

Ramadan Lights are back in London’s West End, with a brand new design from Lantern. From 7th March to 16th April 2024, over 30,000 lights will illuminate the skies between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square.

The installation is inspired by one of the defining features of Ramadan; the daily transition of dawn and dusk. Entitled 'Sundial' the concept is inspired by the rays of light at sunrise and conversely, the light of the moon after dark which signify the start and end of the fasting period.

Eminating from shimmering suns and moons, the moving rays of light transform the display into a timepiece, visualising the passing of day and night. The concept is complemented by geometric patterns and hanging stars that reference the visual style of Islamic art.

London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, along with special guests, kicked off the festivities by attending the switch-on event to mark the start of Ramadan.

Presented by the Aziz Foundation, over 30,000 lights shining throughout Ramadan display ‘Happy Ramadan’ and will change to also mark Eid festivities at the end of the month, with 'Happy Eid' illuminated, making it the first major light display in Europe to honour Eid al Fitr.

Lantern’s design concept merges traditional Islamic art forms with modern design principles, resulting in a landmark installation that celebrates the spirit of Ramadan in the heart of London.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m delighted that our history making Ramadan Lights have returned to light up the West End once again. The display is a wonderful celebration of Ramadan and it sends a clear message to the world that in these dark times London is a beacon for everyone and we celebrate our diversity and welcome all cultures and backgrounds.”

The dynamic and visually captivating design elements illuminate the essence of Ramadan, creating a space for reflection and celebration for Londoners of all faiths and backgrounds.

Special thanks to our clients, the Aziz Foundation, the Heart of London Business Alliance and Westminster City Council, Aisha Desai, the Founder of Ramadan Lights UK alongside our production partners, Field & Lawn, for bringing the designs to life.
